30 Day Farewell (for now)
As I prepare for my move to Atlanta on August 5th, it’s important that I say good bye to my home, just as I would a dear friend. Please join me on this journey. For 30 days, I will be sharing photos, stories, and poems of my final (for now) days with Vermont on Facebook.
Here’s an excerpt:
This maple tree in my mother’s backyard used to play a key role in my poem Home. In later revisions, I removed the tree from the piece, but it remains a strong image of the land from which I come. I wrote this piece upon moving back to VT. It feels appropriate to revisit it as I contemplate departure.
Home
I came to this place
cursed from my travels.
And blessed.
Wander lust reluctant to fade
from the glow of my irises.
I came exhausted by stories
of adventure
of conquer
of fixing the unfixable.
I came nearly spent
on some other land
some other dream
some other promise
I was told to believe.
I came jagged, fists ready.
telling myself this
was the last place I belonged.
I was comforted by loose ends.
Refused to say “forever”
for fear of breaking the word.
(I came as the geese
and the hummingbirds flew;
watched them go ’til all I knew
was a woodpecker
knocking on the trees).

I am also closing out my time in Vermont with a workshops and performances around the state. Find an event near you.
